“Bless Me to Have Fun”- A Letter to My Son

Brody,

For as long as you been praying the first line of your prayers has been “Bless me to have fun today”. I still laugh when I hear it. Occasionally I have wanted to whisper something like “there’s more to life than fun”. I’m glad I haven’t. A few days ago before you went to school you said our family prayers with your usual plead to above: “Bless us to have fun today.”

When you left to school I went to the golf course. It was a balmy 35 degrees when I started my round. I couldn’t get your prayer out of my mind. I had fun. A lot of fun. When you golf by yourself you have lots of time to think about life. I think about your mom, you kids, my patients at the hospital. Sometimes I think about Jesus, people I know who need help, and sometimes I try not to think at all. A round of golf is a long therapy session for me. When I was golfing that day I thought about fun.

Fun for you is playing catch, shooting a basketball, watching Star Wars, and playing with your friends. To Anderson fun is wrestling, playing with his cars and planes, and swimming in the hot tub. Bailey has fun trying to see if she can get Mom and Dad to wake up in the middle of the night.

Mom has fun caring for you kids. I have fun watching Mom take care of you kids. Mom would have more fun if I helped more than I watched. Mom takes care of a lot of other people too. She has fun cooking for other people and helping others who are sick or need a friend. I hope you learn to have fun like Mom by helping other people.

Dad has fun learning. I went to school until I was 36 years old. After that it was time for me to find other fun things to do. I hope that you find that it is fun to learn and do new things.

I have fun at Christmas. When we watch Home Alone and other Christmas movies with you, I have fun. I have fun watching you and Anderson open presents. Hopefully you learn to have fun at Christmas by giving. I have fun sitting in front of the Christmas tree and thinking about Jesus. He is the main reason why I can have fun in life. I hope you have Christmas fun like I do.

Sometimes life won’t be fun. That’s ok. I hope you can learn to be happy when life isn’t fun. Learn to have fun by learning new things. Have fun by being with your family and friends. Have fun by helping other people. Learn to give to other people. That is fun. Have fun by learning about Jesus.

Thanks for teaching me to have fun Brody. Having fun and being happy are synonymous to me. Last night I prayed for Heavenly Father to “bless me to have fun” and be happy. Above all else I think Heavenly Father wants us to be happy. Praying to have fun may be best thing you can pray for.

Dad has fun golfing. Hopefully you have fun golfing with me too.

-Dad
